At OCEANR, we believe in partnerships that drive tangible change towards a cleaner and healthier planet. We are delighted to announce that this year, we will be collaborating with Plastic Fischer.
Plastic Fischer is a German-based social enterprise on a mission to stop plastic pollution in rivers and prevent it from reaching our oceans. With operations spanning Vietnam, India, and Indonesia, their impact is nothing short of inspiring, and that’s exactly why we wanted to join forces as partners.
One of Plastic Fischer’s key focus areas is Bandung, Indonesia, a vibrant and densely populated city on the island of Java. The Citarum River flows through this city, and despite its critical role in the ecosystem, it is one of the most polluted rivers in the world. Together with Plastic Fischer, OCEANR is determined to undo the damage that plastic has caused to this vital ecosystem.
Plastic Fischer: Pioneering Solutions
In 2019, Plastic Fischer founders Karsten and Moritz made the bold decision to relocate to Bandung and directly address the plastic pollution crisis that was unfolding in the city. Armed with a vision and a determination to make a difference, they developed the TrashBoom, a simple but effective floating barrier that captures the majority of plastic waste that enters the river.
The TrashBoom has proven vital in Plastic Fischer’s fight against pollution in the Citarum, as they work alongside efforts by the Indonesian national army, which has been fighting to restore the Citarum River’s health since 2018.
OCEANR’s Commitment: Remove 25 Tonnes of Plastic Pollution
We are proud to support Plastic Fischer’s crucial work by funding the collection of 25 tonnes of river plastic this year… and we’re just getting started! To achieve this huge goal, we are sponsoring our very own TrashBoom system in the Citarum River, maximising our collective efforts to make a measurable difference to the health of our planet’s river ecosystems.
Making a People-Focused Impact
Plastic Fischer’s mission isn’t just about the environment, it’s about empowering people too. This is another shared value with OCEANR that brought our ambitious minds together.
Since September 2021, Plastic Fischer has provided full-time employment to 14 local workers, many of whom had never experienced secure employment. These team members receive:
- Fair wages with timely payments
- Interest-free loans
- Social benefits
- Health insurance
By creating stable jobs and supporting their employees, Plastic Fischer is building a sustainable model that uplifts both the planet and its people for future generations.
A Circular Economy in Action
Plastic Fischer’s impact goes beyond collecting plastic, it’s also about closing the loop. As of 2025, they have removed over 280 tonnes of plastic from Indonesia’s Citarum River and its tributaries. After collection, the plastic waste materials are taken to Plastic Fischer’s sorting facility, where they are dried, separated, and processed.
- Recyclable plastics are sold to local recyclers, re-entering the supply chain.
- Non-recyclable materials are responsibly processed according to international standards.
This circular approach ensures that every piece of waste is managed with care, preventing it from re-entering the environment and causing further harm. Additionally, this commitment to resource management aligns with OCEANR’s goals and our use of recycled materials in the production of our apparel.
Together for a Together for a Cleaner Future
At OCEANR, sustainability is much more than a buzzword, it’s at the heart of everything we do as a company and as a team of ambitious, passionate people. By partnering with Plastic Fischer, we are not only addressing the pressing issue of river plastic but also contributing to a cleaner, healthier future for our oceans, wildlife, and communities.
As we look ahead, we invite our partners and our community to support us in maximising the impact of our partnership with Plastic Fischer. Together, we know that it is possible to turn the tide on plastic pollution and revitalise our planet’s ecosystems.
