What We Choose to Wear has a Direct Impact on Nature
This Thursday 22nd May, we are celebrating the International Day for Biological Diversity under its official theme of “harmony with nature and sustainable development”.
At OCEANR, we make sure that sustainability isn’t just a buzzword. We keep sustainable practices and our commitment to a circular supply chain at the foundation of everything we do. As we celebrate International Biodiversity Day, we’re taking a moment to reflect on the connection between fashion and the ecosystems that sustain us.
It’s easy to take clothes for granted and not spend an extra minute thinking about where the fabric was sourced but at OCEANR, we know that respecting our planet and its biodiversity is central to our mission to protect the planet.
Why Biodiversity Matters
Biodiversity, or the variety of life on Earth, is the heartbeat of a healthy planet. It ensures clean air and water, supports food systems, regulates our climate, and even inspires design. Every ecosystem, from lush rainforests to coral reefs, plays a critical role in maintaining the balance we all depend on.
And it’s this balance that inspired OCEANR to get started in the first place — we are inspired by the ocean and everything in it, that’s why we understand the importance of protecting it for generations to come. We are mindful of where our materials are sourced from, and we are serious about preventing plastic waste from entering our planet’s natural ecosystems.

Despite this, biodiversity is declining faster than at any time in human history. Deforestation, pollution, climate change, and even fashion are contributing to habitat loss and species extinction.
The Connection Between Fashion and Biodiversity
The fashion industry is one of the most resource-intensive in the world. Conventional textile production contributes to water pollution, deforestation, and the overuse of pesticides, all of which directly impact biodiversity. Although OCEANR ensures that we do our bit in reducing the harmful effects that apparel production has on the environment, we know this is not the case for the industry at large.

The global footprint of the fashion industry is why the clothes that we choose to wear really do matter. At OCEANR, we make conscious decisions to minimise our impact on the environment, staying true to our core value of ethical production practices.
Some of the ways in which we do our bit for the planet in our production process are:
- OCEANR is a Certified B Corporation, performing in line with rigorous industry sustainability standards.
- We offer a take-back scheme to our brand partners, giving them the option to return old, worn OCEANR apparel back to us so we can up-cycle the materials.
- One of our key printing techniques, sublimation, doesn’t require water or harmful dyes.
- We are in partnership with BCome, whose QR codes are added to our apparel and provide insights such as the carbon footprint, water usage, kilometres travelled, of our fabrics.
- We are working with Plastic Fischer to remove plastic from Indonesia’s river systems and recently hit a 30,000kg milestone.
Small Changes that make a Big Impact
OCEANR believes protecting biodiversity isn’t just the responsibility of scientists and conservationists, it’s something that we can all contribute to, every day. Whether it’s choosing natural fibres, supporting ethical brands, or simply being more mindful about our consumption habits, everything works towards making a real difference to our biodiversity.
This International Biodiversity Day, let’s celebrate the incredible diversity of life on Earth and commit to protecting it, one cut of sustainable fabric at a time!
